Online furniture brand Loaf (Loaf.com) is a one-stop shop offering gorgeous homeware that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. The business was launched in December 2008 by entrepreneur Charlie Marshall and was originally named The Sleep Room.
Having lost a whole Saturday trying to buy a bed, Charlie decided to make the shopping experience as quick and hassle free as possible. Having established themselves as the online bed specialists, the company successfully rebranded as Loaf in October 2012. The same year Loaf launched sofas to add to their collection of beds and bedroom furniture and in March 2013 they are branching out into all areas of the home including designs for the kitchen and bathroom.
Loaf is one of the fastest-growing companies in the UK, proving that there are a lot of people out there who share the same love of great value, gorgeous things.
“When I started out in business 15 years ago (I used to have a soup manufacturing company) I benefitted from invaluable support from Business Link. The government organisation, designed to help grass root businesses, taught me the financial basics such as how to calculate VAT repayments and cash flow.
Although businesses still need to have a good grasp of the financial aspects, for me branding and creativity are what really counts.
As well as nailing the basics, the School For Creative Startups is dedicated to creative talent. Americans Doug and Medeia clearly have a kick-ass attitude which is one of the reasons why I joined the programme. In the UK we have an amazing understanding of brands and are incredibly creative. I think it’s interesting to see how this attitude and two cultures are going to benefit each other and the positives that the programme can bring to UK enterprise.”
