Justin Hammond
In 2007 Justin Hammond devised the Catlin Art Prize, an annual showcase for the most talented new artists in the UK, described by The Independent as ‘the student equivalent of the Turner Prize’. Justin went on to write The Catlin Guide, now an annual publication and recognised as the essential reference for collectors of emerging artists. In 2010 he launched J Hammond and published An Unspoken Arrangement to coincide with Alex Ball’s debut solo exhibition.
“New artists are no longer in such a hurry to align with a single gallery; there’s a certain value attached to independence. Support networks are constantly cropping up – online platforms and a new clutch of artist-led fairs are just a couple of examples – but a huge number of art grads are ill-equipped for life as a professional artist. They certainly remain at a huge disadvantage when launching a new business. Basic business skills such as pricing are not part of the art school curriculum and – as a result – artists are vulnerable to bad advice in that crucial first year out of college.
I’m backing School for Creative Startups to guard against that by connecting new entrepreneurs with a superb team of experts.”
